A tie (from the German "Halstuch" - "neckerchief") is a scarf, ribbon or strip of fabric that wraps around the neck under the collar of a shirt or blouse and is tied in front with a bow or knot. Nowadays, this is a familiar (and in some cases simply necessary) element of a man's suit, designed to add elegance and sophistication to its owner (and sometimes hide a not entirely clean shirt collar from prying eyes).

But it was not always so. The first neckerchiefs, which appeared in ancient Rome, protected their owners from colds and served as one of the attributes of military uniforms. In Europe, this piece of toiletry appeared after the Thirty Years War, with the light hand of Louis XVI, who introduced the fashion for neckerchiefs, at that time used by Croatian mercenaries for protection from the cold.

During its existence, the scarf has undergone many changes - the variety of shapes, colors, sizes is simply amazing. It was only in the twentieth century that the well-known tie appeared, which became not only an object of dress, but also a way of self-expression, a manifestation of a man's taste. There are many rules for choosing, tying, wearing a tie, which are quite difficult to understand, and many myths and misconceptions about why this item of clothing is needed and whether it is needed at all. We will try to debunk some of the most famous myths, along the way by reporting the most interesting facts about ties.

The length of the tie does not matter - it is not visible under the jacket. Yes, if you are going to spend the whole day in a tightly buttoned jacket. And if not? In any case, keep in mind that (according to research) weak-willed and fearful people tie a tie that is too short, and brave and original, argument-loving individuals are too long. Therefore, if you do not want to get the wrong idea about you, remember a simple rule: a tie should cover the belt buckle (at least half).

There are no rules regarding the width of the tie. This is not true. The width of the tie is usually in proportion to the size of the jacket and the width of the lapels. On average, the width of this item of men's toilet should be from seven to nine centimeters.

If the tie gets dirty and wrinkled, it doesn't matter. We wash and iron - it will be as good as new. In fact, the tie may become deformed or damaged during the washing and ironing process. Therefore, dry cleaning will save the tie from dirt, and instead of ironing, you can use a simple method: wind the tie around your finger, carefully remove it and leave it rolled up for a while.

You don't have to untie the tie - you can simply pull the thin end out of the knot. Misconception. Actions of this kind can damage even a very high-quality and expensive item. Therefore, each time the tie should be loosened (and in the reverse order of tying) and let it hang for two or three days on a hanger. If you simply do not want to waste time tying complicated knots, you can purchase a regatta tie equipped with a rubber band and a special fastener at the back.

Ties appeared in Germany or France. For the first time, neckerchiefs appeared in ancient Rome, where they were one of the elements of military uniforms and provided protection from the cold.

A tie is the best gift for a man. Indeed, friends, relatives or a loved one can safely give a tie (preferably expensive). But the boss or work colleague may regard such a gift as a violation of business etiquette.

The pattern on the tie doesn't matter. Psychologists believe that striped ties are most often chosen by businessmen who are law-abiding and reliable in everything. The floral pattern betrays romantic and extraordinary people, and the speck or polka dots are the choice of the ambitious and purposeful. Circles on a tie testify to professionalism, and diamonds and squares testify to the gullibility of its owner. Reliable business people like to wear ornamented ties, while pedantic and conservative representatives of human society prefer plain ties.
In addition, designers believe that when choosing an ornament on a tie, one should take into account the shape of the face of the man who will wear this product. For a person with rounded features, a tie with soft, rounded details will work. If you are a happy owner of a face with straight, hard features, then you should opt for striped or checkered ties.
Sigmund Freud had a slightly different view of the reasons for choosing this or that pattern on the tie. He believed that a man who chooses a tie with the image of fish, flowers, people needs the means to activate his sex drive. According to Freud, the aforementioned pattern on a man's tie is direct evidence that his wife is notorious and unhappy with her intimate life.

The tie should be the same color as the suit. Indeed, with a light suit and a dark shirt, a light tie to match the suit looks best. But to a dark suit with a dark shirt, it is better to add a lighter tie, preferably a tone lighter than the suit. For a black suit and white shirt, a light tie (you can with a small pattern) is well suited. If you decide to wear a light suit with a light shirt, then the tie should be matched to the shirt. And finally, with a dark suit and light shirt, you can wear a tie to match the shirt or suit. In addition, patterned ties are suitable for monochromatic shirts, plain ties for plaid or striped shirts (and the color of the tie in this case must match the color of the stripes on the shirt).
It should be noted that, according to psychologists, a principled and domineering person will give preference to a blue tie. A blue tie is worn by a completely trustworthy man, pink is preferred by emotional individuals. The red color of a tie speaks of assertiveness and perseverance, green - of punctuality.

The quality of a tie is difficult to determine on your own. Buying a tie, like purchasing any other wardrobe item, is a delicate matter. And so that the purchased item does not disappoint your expectations, you should pay attention to some features of the tie:
- Lining - even, without puffs and irregularities, preferably wool;
- Seams - even and inconspicuous, the seam from the inner wide part is not fully sewn up. Smooth seams indicate that this is a handmade tie, hard seams indicate that the product is manufactured;
- The cut of the upper side should consist of three parts, not two - such a tie better matches the shape of the neck;
- Fabric - dense, heavy, no puffs, high quality. You should choose ties made of silk or synthetic fabrics like silk, cashmere, fine wool. When choosing a cotton tie or a product made of linen and viscose, remember that they will quickly lose their appearance and shape;
- Place the tie across your palm - the wide end should hang straight down without twisting.

The tie is not suitable for originals who want to stand out in the crowd. Completely erroneous opinion. In addition to the fact that you can choose a completely breathtaking color combination (for example, in one product there can be up to 60 different colors), there is an opportunity to purchase a tie with the image of beer, vodka, heroes of your favorite cartoons, as well as with various inscriptions. You can also order a handmade tie, one and only, which will undoubtedly emphasize your originality. On such a tie, you can transfer a photo in TIF or JPG format or decorate it with hand painting. Moreover, the manufacture of such a tie does not take so much time - two or three days, no more.

Ties are products exclusively from various types of fabric. There are knitted, leather and even ... wooden ties. They are made by the carpenter Lubos Mashek, who lives in the Czech town of Chotibozh. Each piece consists of 11 elements, connected with a regular elastic band and decorated with hand-painting.

Some restaurants and nightclubs are not allowed without a tie. It really is. Moreover, at the entrance to such fashionable establishments, the doormen even have a set of ties - especially for forgetful clients. But visitors to a tavern in the Australian Alps, in Abtenau, will face a completely different condition - entry in a tie is strictly prohibited. If a person still dares to appear there "in full dress", the owner, according to established tradition, will cut off his tie with huge scissors and nail it to the wall along with the business card of the unlucky visitor.
